First Nations Virtual Substance Use and Psychiatry Service

Provided by First Nations Health Authority

Provides Indigenous people in BC with access to specialists in addictions medicine and psychiatry.
The purpose of the service is to:
  • Provide direct virtual access to addictions specialists and psychiatric care for First Nations people and their families living in BC.
  • Provide addictions medicine and psychiatry services where every client encounter is aligned with the principles and practices of cultural safety and humility.
  • Provide addictions medicine and psychiatry services where collaborative care planning and wraparound care services are integral to all client encounters.
Services provided:
  • Harm reduction support
  • Relapse prevention planning
  • Education about treatment centers and referrals if possible.
  • Treatment care planning with the client
  • Diagnosis support
  • Medication review
  • Counselling and therapy connections in their communities (virtual or telehealth options for those who are isolated and remote)
  • Scheduled check-ins based on client request (either while waiting for an initial consult or to support their mental health and wellness journey afterwards.
  • Mental health and wellness support and connections to services as needed (such as Elders and knowledge keepers)
Referral
This is a referral-based service and is available at no cost to all people in BC who identify as being Indigenous. This service is also available to the family members of Indigenous people, even if they are non-status. The service welcomes referrals from trusted health and wellness providers, Knowledge Keepers and Elders.
